Fuzhou, December 9 (Li Hao) - Xinhua News Agency Client Report: "The soil improvement carbon sink project has added a new pipeline for transporting nutrients to the land and opened up a new path for agricultural carbon sinks. It not only enhances the publics awareness of agriculture as a green industry but also injects new vitality into future soil improvement work." On December 9, at the "Signing Ceremony of Soil Improvement Carbon Sink Transactions in Zoumadai Modern Agricultural Demonstration Zone" held in Huian County, Fujian Province, Gao Xiangzhao, chief expert of the National Agricultural Technology Extension and Service Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, stated. On the same day, a batch of soil improvement carbon sink transaction projects were signed collectively.

Soil, known as the "skin" of the Earth, is not only the foundation of agricultural development but also a huge carbon pool. Soil carbon sequestration refers to the process of absorbing and storing carbon dioxide in the soil. Chinas soil carbon storage accounts for 6.73% of the global total, and researching and protecting soil carbon sequestration is one of the important paths to achieve "carbon neutrality."

In his speech at the event, Chen Jianfeng, Deputy Secretary of the Huian County Party Committee, introduced that in recent years, Huian County has deeply explored agricultural carbon sink projects and, relying on its advantages in the oyster industry (oyster output accounts for over 90% of the countys mariculture output), has explored a new model of "oyster breeding - waste shell utilization - soil improvement - carbon sink transactions." It has introduced Quanzhou Mata Ecological Technology Co., Ltd., which has formed a professional industrial chain in oyster shell collection, processing, bio-improver R&D, manufacturing, application, and sales. The company uses oyster shell waste to develop and produce agricultural soil conditioners, which are used to improve soil acidity, reduce pollution, and fix carbon.

"Demonstration Project of Carbon Sequestration and Emission Reduction by Applying Mata Soil Conditioner to Acidified Soil" in Zoumadai Modern Agricultural Demonstration Zone

In May this year, the "Demonstration Project of Carbon Sequestration and Emission Reduction by Applying Mata Soil Conditioner to Acidified Soil" was launched in Zoumadai Modern Agricultural Demonstration Zone, Huian County. Implemented by Quanzhou Xinhe Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. and Quanzhou Mata Ecological Technology Co., Ltd., the project covers an area of 1,812.64 mu. As calculated by the Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the project achieved a carbon emission reduction of 5,643 tons within one growth cycle of planting. Through the transaction at Xiamen Property Rights Trading Center (Xiamen Carbon and Pollution Discharge Rights Trading Center), it will open up a new way to increase income.

At the "Signing Ceremony of Soil Improvement Carbon Sink Transactions in Zoumadai Modern Agricultural Demonstration Zone", Quanzhou Mata Ecological Technology Co., Ltd., Fujian Nanwang Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd., and Fujian Fubang Food Co., Ltd. signed carbon sink transaction contracts, and Xiamen Property Rights Trading Center awarded plaques to the three parties. A batch of soil improvement promotion projects and soil improvement industry-university-research cooperation projects were also signed collectively.

During the event, experts from the Fujian Carbon Neutrality Society and the Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences respectively released the Guidelines for Carbon Footprint Accounting of Oyster Shell Soil Improvement Products (T/MTZH002-2024) and Methodology for Carbon Sequestration and Emission Reduction Projects by Applying Oyster Shell Soil Conditioners to Acidified Soil, providing calculable basis for the carbon sink benefits generated by applying oyster shell soil conditioners to acidified soil.

On the same day, participating experts visited the Zoumadai Modern Agricultural Exhibition Center in Huian County to gain an in-depth understanding of the construction of soil improvement carbon sink projects in Zoumadai Modern Agricultural Demonstration Zone. Wang Yongming, Chairman of Quanzhou Mata Ecological Technology Co., Ltd., introduced that the company is gradually establishing a new "capital + technology + farmers" oyster breeding model, forming industrial linkage with upstream and downstream links featuring high output, high certainty and high added value, so as to contribute to rural revitalization. Meanwhile, relying on the standardized processes established in practice, it strives to form a large-scale and replicable business model, laying a foundation for the next stage of expansion.

This event was guided by the National Agricultural Technology Extension and Service Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the Fujian Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and hosted by the Institute of Resources, Environment and Soil Fertilizer of Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Quanzhou Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and Huian County Peoples Government.
